Golmaal 3

I am not really a movie going kinds.. unless of course if its something sensible or romantic, then you know I ll be there.. so Golmaal 3 or Action Replay or even Dabaangg is not really my kinda movie.. but when you have a friend for company, and have time to kill and its just 9 am in the morning what do you do? We buy tickets for Golmaal 3 and walk in the Cineplex leaving our brains behind. That’s exactly what you should do before you go and watch this movie.

The movie has bright colours splashed all over, sun beach, pretty looking Kareena as arm candy amidst 5 other men, Ajay Devgan (the guy manages to appear hot even at 45 J) Arshad Warsi (lukewarm) Tushaar Kapoor (now a tad bit repetitive but brilliant performance as the dumb guy) Sheryas Talpade and Kunal Khemu ( totally wasted!). The movie is good in patches, laugh riot completely but then there were places when it felt as if you were forced to smile or literally held at gunpoint to laugh at jokes that fell flat. But having said that, some dialogues which made no sense to the scene was absolutely a treat! Mithun chakroborty in a comic avatar was really a surprise and did a commendable job even at this age. His dialogue to his girl friend’s father “jinke ghar sheeshay ke hote hain… who basement mein kapde badaltein hai!” tickled people pink. Music was pretty situational, nothing to rant about. The action sequence was well scripted and directed. In all the movie does manage well as a laughter filled time pass, a paisa wasool for sure… high on style quotient and a sure shot way to beat the blues of mundane world away!

Yay-ness!!

Yup we have made an almost clean sweep at the Oscars. AR Rehman and Gulzar has done us all proud by winning the Oscar. it truly is a proud moment for all of us. CONGRATULATIONS!!

I had watched Slumdog a month or so back. yeah it was good. the photography was amazing. however i wasn't as impressed as the rest. i don't abide by the grotesque and almost raw portrayal of a few things that the director tries to sell in the name of reality cinema. the harsher lines could have been given a softer tough but then to each his own. having said all this, it is evident i don't know why there is such a hyper over Slumdog because it is a well made film but nothing to go ga ga over it according to me. here are a few things i think, its okay if you disagree

1.AR Rehman deserves an Oscar.period. but he had given far greater melodies before, in films like Roja which won him a National Award, Taal, Guru etc all has been masterpiece. is it then because Slumdog is a British production that finally Rehman's talents are been recognized at a world platform?

2.We greedy Indians are hungry for an Oscar even if it comes at our expense. i do champion for realism in movies, but by selling our poverty, making million bucks of it and presenting a picture of all the notorious things India stands for as a global image is hardly what i call an Oscar winning theme. films like TZP, Lagaan, even Swades had potential, and were treated as a mere poor cousin in the Oscar nominees.

3. Gulzar is one of the greatest lyricist in India. but do we need a Jai Ho, to prove his greatness? i think the song came as a bolt out of the blue and a tad bit out of the context and frankly it ruined the kind of high tension crescendo the movie was building up, all for giving the song and dance Bollywood flavour to the movie.

I am an non-entity. However these are the few points i feel we must notie before blindly celebrating just because a Western honour has been heaped on us riding high on British shoulders.

P.S- what shocked me was AR Rehman didn't confirm with Sukhwinder Singh, the singer of Jai Ho about his performance at the Oscars as he was left floundering for confirmation, only to realize that Mr Rehman wasn't actually taking him along.

LUCKBYCHANCE

I watched Zoya Akhtar's directorial debut Luck by Chance, the movie is an honest attempt about the film industry with its nitty ghitties, the casting directors, the starry tantrums, the ingrateful star towards his discoverer. Farhan Akhtar was as usual in his subtle but promising self, and it was an impressive act that he put up, Konkona sensharma was her usual self delivering her best but noteworthy was the costumes, she looked pretty with new experiments in her wardrope, quite liked it. Rishi Kapoor was amazing and so was Hrithik Roshan in a two bit role and Isha Sherwani in her mamma's doll character was quite convincing too. Dimple Kapadia held on her own and made most of her screentime. hordes of other actors from the film fraternity made the film drew the interest and added to the star quotient to the film.

Confidence and possitive thinking takes one to places but it is important to remember those from the summit who were there when you were no-one this was the subtle message. this movie was nothing out of the world to talk about according to me[ i may be wrong] but then the attempt was good and the outcome was quite enjoyable, with the witty oneliners and the cast was just right for everyone played their part to perfect. I quite enjoyed myself, so my verdict is a 3/5* a worthy effort by the debutant director, may be a worthy of a second time watch.

Dostana

Karan Johar production's latest is Dostana, directed by Tarun Mansukhani . this is the first that Karan Johar steps out of his superstition with the word K and choose to make a film by the same name as the one his dad had once directed. if you want to watch an absolute entertainer, then this is it; but don't take your brains along because its a laugh riot and not some arty flick. music is somewhat good nothing great. but what grabs eyeballs is truly John Abrahim's butt, some hilarious performance by AB baby as the gay icon, Priyanka Chopra looking absolutely the babe who is smolderingly hot! and really good acting by Kiron Kher in a two bit role. this flick is not degrading the gay fraternity, but very sensitively handled by KJO, great punches and some really rib tickling performances. the movie is that of a feel good one, with its subtle emotions and all about friendship and love [in friendship] what probably could have been an outright cool and funny movie was marred by an unnecessary loose ending , and twist in the tale with a forceful gay kiss to prove friendship, that is truly ludicrous. but on the whole a great entertainer and will probably go on to be a hit!

Fashion

i watched the long awaited fashion.i had been meaning to watch it for ages but nothing seemed to work out. sometimes the timings weren't right and somethings the movie theatre.anyway finally i watched the movie i knew i just had to watch.


Madhur Bhandarkar's movie are pioneers for realistic movies. they narrate a story of a segment of the society in its starkness and detailing. i was a little apprehensive because i didn't know if the movie could deliver. the actor who startled me was, Mudga Godse, she was such a natural. Kangna Ranaut was her usual nautanki, yelling and screaming banshee, playing her role of a drug addict supermodel, on her way out well. but the show stopper was Priyanka Chopra undoubtedly. her eyes spoke volumes, it mirrored hurt, dejection, attitude, love, and arrogance, with its easy succession.what is splendid is the eye for detail and the confident finishing touch. it could have been a narration of raise and fall of one, then the other rides her waves until she too is pulled down. but no. it is the rise and fall is there, deftly handled by the director. the message is loud and clear, it is never to late to try and that turns the story around. the movie gives us a situation and two solutions, resounding several warnings of the outcome of it. it is ultimately how we handle pressure in a given condition. the music score of the film is quite good. this movie is definitely deserves a second watch.

i wonder why fashion industry made such an hue and cry about the movie. i think htey should be proud of it and thank Madhur Bhandarkar to make such a movie, because only he ccould have handle such a topic with panache.

Janey Tu...Ya Jaane Na

after jab we met this is one fresh movie that is bound to leave an impact on the audience long after the last scene has been played. the USP of the film is not A. R Rehman's music, or Aamir Khan productions; yes these are added bonus but the actual USP is a bunch of actors who look the part and director and script writer,abbas tyrewalla ;who knew exactly what he wanted and extracted it out from the actors.


Acting- each of the characters looked their part,from the main characters to blink and miss roles. expressions seemed effortless. chemistry between genelia and imran was palpable. one could connection without the effort with the film.

Music-simple,hummable and extremely melodious, one wonders how Rehman manages to produce music for such a youthful film when he is known for his music in a slightly mature genre but here lies his skill.

cons-very predictable and some very over the top scenes and sequences

pros-even over the top segments were blurred from memory with great acting and good script. the director does a commendable job in making a commercial,rom com,with full on masala to stand out and hold its ground. the film looks oven fresh and effort put behind every scene and aspect of film making makes it so much more paisa vasool. imran khan is an actor to look out for, with genes of aamir khan running through his veins and his own sheer talent is an actor who will go places. genelia surely will get her due being the catty meow. the comic timings are absolutely perfect. and once the climax comes about one wishes once can savor love all over again!

so its a 4.5 stars from me...its a must watch for all you die hard romantics

Jodha - Akbar

Ashutosh Gowarikar has surpassed himself as a director par excellence!i walked into the multiplex with mixed feelings.in Barkha Dutts "WE THE PEOPLE" i heard someone remark that it was a 3long hours of watching a man try and consummate with his wife with frustrating moments of war and other irrelevant stuff.i had read reviews that said, that the movie is good only in parts and that the costume and cinematography is brilliant others its not worth mentioning.and the great controversy was that despite having learnt at school, we are told by some unknown historian that Jodha was not Akbar's favourite wife.in fact Akbar did not have a Rajput wife name Jodha. as if this was not enough, the Rajputs banned the movie terming as inaccurate and a tarnish to their brave name.

After i watched the 3 hour plus movie, something struck me that even though the movie was lengthy i found it entertaining and engaging to the very end.i don't think anyone but Ashwariya and Hrithik could do justice to the role of protagonists in this movie.they sizzle throughout as their chemistry was just breathtaking.truly "they say it best when they say nothing at all". their eyes speak it all.it mirrors Akbar's bewilderment not knowing the Hindu customs when Jodha extends her "pujas thali" to him, her mortification and anger at being married off to a Moghal despite being a Hindu reflects in her tear filled eyes.the love that both feel are mirrored in each others eyes.its the eyes that spoke it all.both were brilliant!the cinematography was beyond comparison as the war sequence was flawless and commendable.costumes and jewellery was beautiful,music surpassed everything, A R Rehman has outdone himself and the choreography was at its best! i wonder why the Rajputs had an objection to the movie,when they were so highly praised and shown in a good light. every decade some historian crops up with a new theory of his vision of history and we are yet again forced to acknowledge it.this is a movie and a creative work, so even if a certain things have factual errors as a work of art it should be overlooked.

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR!!

This is one of the best film till date. a sensitive topic is so well portrayed. it touched all who came, young and old all alike, one cant help but let the tears run their course as the movie wrenches your heart. it leaves you pondering over your childhood and the way you treat your kids or rather it will effect the way you will now treat kids now.it has "that" kind of an impact!!its beautiful, one just falls short of words to describe the movie. truly Amir Khan has outdone himself, a true perfectionist and beautiful animation to top it all. Darsheel deserves an applause for a beautiful and realistic portray of the homesick and misunderstood Ishan, Tisca Chopra was good as well as his mother,and it goes beyond saying Amir Khan's maiden venture was more than successful.an outstanding effort!!!!!

Kailasher Kalenkari is the latest movie churned out by ace film maker satyajit ray's son.it is as thrilling as always is super successful as all the preceeding movies based on bengals favourite fictional character best known to all as "feluda". with Topshe, Lal Mohan Ganguly and a little assistance by Sidhu Jetha, Prodosh Mittir[feluda] goes to the Ajanta and Ellora caves to stop the mysterious beheading of various statues and its consequent smuggling to Americans.it is a gripping tale of a detective and this prey and the appreciation received by the audience proves that indeed even after four decades, Satyajit Ray's feluda has not lost out or weathered time, it remains as evergreen and as popular when it was first published as a short story by the writer,director,music direct and artist Satyajit Ray .a must watch for all Bengali's who have grown up reading Satyajit Rays classics and feluda,the film doesn't not disappoint.

OSO

Farah Khan’s OSO has been declared the biggest commercial blockbuster of Indian cineman, where on the other side Sawaariya by Sanjay Leela Bhansali even though was described as a Visual Poetry, created aping the Broadway style bombed at the BO. The film critic panned the latter saying that it had no story line. Haven seen both, I found OSO’s packaging real good while Sawaariya very dull, gloomy and boring. However being a King Khan movie, OSO went laughing away to the coffers while the other bombed. OSO is an outright bollywood dhinchak movie and doesn’t pretend otherwise. a full on entertainer; it never leaves anything to crib. Debutant Deepika was really commendable while Shahrukh was back to being himself as he has done over the years in his entire chocolate boy image, playing the lover boy to the hilt. A spoof on yesteryears sometimes even the overacting seemed over the top. And a lot totally unrealistic though what is commendable is, reincarnations as a topic was well handled even though one can find several loop holes. Music well, there is nothing great to talk about, its good, Vishal and Shekhar has brought forward, ankhon mein teri is one song which seems to have brought back the beauty of lyrical poetry adding melody to the already beautiful song. Shreya Talpade leaves a mark on our minds as Pappu Master, and in a never before role is Arjun Rampal as the admirato, the villain hero was really wonderful. Writing about OSO and not mentioning the 31 star song, deewaangi deewangi is without question. Its almost like a game to spot our favorites in seconds of appearance. all in all a good movie lacking a finishing touch here and there and its best advised to watch it only while your brain is malfunctioning or is totally absent. A complete masala bollywood movie a must watch for time pass.

Jab We Met!

Jab We Met is breath of fresh air in an industry where most films are either remakes,inspired or or follow formula commercial cinema.Kareena in a new before bubbly,outgoing bold girl.Geet who meets a broken,depressed and lost Shahid-Aditya in the train to Bhatinda.its a complete kareena movie and she delivers and how.its hard not to like her and Shahid underplays his part really well.this is the first time ever that the ex real life duo Shahid-Kareena has come up with a hit and its a pitty to think that the chemistry which is for all to see doesn't not exist anymore.its a nice and clean movie,with no hitches whatsoever.the songs are quite catchy,cinematography is brilliant and acting is at par with the standard set by writer-director Imtiaz Ali.i'm a sucker for romance and this romcom exceeds my expectation.a must watch for all those who simply love watching an entertainer and for all those young people and love birds.its bound to make you fall in love if not with someone then surely urself.

BadSHAH Of Bollywood!

I have never been a Shahrukh Khan fan from my childhood.in fact it quite surprised me why people went ga ga go go over him.i found nothing worth admiring in him.but that didn't stop me from appreciating his movies-Dil toh pagal hai,Kuch kuch hota hai,Kal ho na ho,Swades and more recently Chak de!i really enjoyed all the movies but somewhere i feel that shahrukh is very stereotypical.earlier i felt he did romantic movies because he knew he was great at it and wouldn't be much of an action hero or pull the macho stuff well.but it was evident,where other heroes were experimenting with all kinds of roles,shahrukh stuck to what he did best!and for that i appreciated him.he never followed the trend but was a trend in himself.there were times he romanced ladies on screen half his age but he pulled that off with great aplomb!a thing that only he could do.

Of late i notice him trying out things that has already been tested and is a sure shot success.Amitabh Bacchan made Kaun Banega Crorepati became a household name,due to a feud with him,mr khan decided to take up the offer of hosting the show.moreover he starred in the re-make of DON, a film originally done by Mr Bacchan.then comes Main Hoon Na, a film by friend Farah Khan,with all essentials spices of bollywood,patriotism,romance, and action:a tested formula and a sure shot hit!Chak de, a sports flick was a hit too but what is noticeable is that previously Amir Khan's Lagaan was based on a similar theme was a hit and marked as the first bollywood flick to be nominated in the Oscars.With his next release-Om Shanti Om,he is seen romancing Deepika Padukore ,daughter of ace badminton champ prakash padukore.what is visible despite his perfectionist expressions and impeccable acting in the trailers is his age lines.

A man of 45 romancing a lady in her early 20's works great only when it is presented is a proper way.but one has to keep in mind there are things even make up cant hide!in this movie we see him bare it all, to show his newly acquired 6 pack abs,but to tell the truth he is no match to the likes of the macho image of John Abraham or Hrithik Roshan,there are certain things that doesn't suit all and sundry,just to be on the top one should not follow trends blindly but personalize it.Shakrukh is still the badshah of the industry he need not take drastic steps or follow trodden paths to maintain his position in the summit but he should pave his own way!he should stick to being an actor of substance than join the bandwagon!

the bong connection!!!

The bong connection is all about coming back to roots....ANDY returns to his homeland in kolkata to his grandfather and his passion for music...in hope to retain the rich culture that bongs have to offer in terms of baul gaan and rabindra sangeet.....on the other hand APU travels to New York in search for greener pastures.....in his motherland ANDY learns the nuances of a city life...the politics in music...the shrew mentality of cunning,plotting relatives who just see their profit in life..sentimental values nor culture means a bit to them....in the end ANDY's jethu breaks down and submits to his nephew saying...if only he had a son like him life would have been better...despite being the man who had nearly driven him out of home saying his was the son of a selfish brother who refused to look after their handicapped father...APU in a new country and a new city finds a lot of probashi bangali[bongs who live abroad]he gets mugged...walks in on his roommate making out with his gay partner...almost makes out with this unknown girl from the bar...still the bong connection worked....it refused him from giving in to the non bong population...Gary, his boss a probashi himself who had metamorphosised into an American and surely not a bong in the end surrendered defeat "Apu is always aporajito" he had said ["Apu"the name here is symbolic for Apu is the famous character of the ace film maker Satyajit Ray, was always undefeated]

The music was absolutely brilliant...with the OST - the bong connection and majhi re...was really melodious but "pagla hawa" with the holla hoolla was a real bad attempt at fusion...a true bong wont ever accept Tagore's masterpieces being such badly handled...

According to me...the movie was a bit abrupt in parts....witty one liners and typical bangla kothabatra and masala made it seem real life...with glimpses of the city....Park street,Flury's, Ramkrishna Mission and Someplace Else....all in all a good entertainer...a great crossover movie that definitely brings one back to his roots......

cheeni kum

Fibbed to my manager and bunked office and went to see cheeni kum with samik today....basically its a feel good movie with a perfect belnd of humour and reality check thrown in....a mature romance between tangri kabab [Tabu/Meena] 34,single and ghass phuss[Amitabh Bacchan/Buddhadev]64,arrogant chef and definitely single.....what most struck me was the chemistry between Big B and Tabu....its funny how a Hydrabadi briyani can bring two people close and make an arrogant chef much more mellow......the special appearance by baby swini was really fantastic as "sexy"...with her bossy and demanding ways,Zohra Segal was wonderful too even at this age....all in all quite entertaining....Paresh Rawal was good with his comic timings...towards the end the climax seemed to dron on and on....despite that...witty one liners...subtle streaks of humor and a perfect combination of seasoned actors...for an entertaining watch...

Kabul Express

I watched Kabul Express two days back….Yash Raj film production..Kabul Express is written and directed by Kabir Khan…. shot in Kabul a city ravaged by war for the last 20 yrs…it reflects the various kinds of people dwelling there…their lives post war…their sentiments…lifestyle…
Kabul Express is the journey of two reporters and a driver, Arshad Warsi [jai kapoor, tv journalist-cinematographer]and John Abraham[Suhel Khan,tv journalist-director]and Hanif Humghum as Khyber [Afghani driver and guide]in quest of a Taliban who would help the reporter to present a news piece that would give them the recognition and fame….
It’s a travelogue where a journey through war affected Kabul..soldier camps of Afghani’s and US troops in Afghanistan who were on a trail to hunt and ultimately kill the Taliban’s brutally…..how the travellers are hijacked by a Taliban and then later rogues…their experience with danger …. Kabul express tells it all…the highlight of Kabul express is how a Talib despite being from the enemy camp and being the captor becomes almost a friend who rescues the travellers from rouges…shares their love for cricket and hindi songs…breaking the language barrier how they communicated and bonded….a crisis brought them together and united them….men across different cultures and civilizations are but the same…same emotions and same sentiments…war is futile ..no one actually gains from it is the message that it put across with ought taking any sides….
A well made film…photography is just awesome…. innuendos…one liners and comic elements and perfect comic timing made what could have been a dull and gloomy movie, a very enjoyable one….a movie based on war…with undertones of emotions of people living a war, both friend and foe,as well as a spectator. Kabul Express is a big time entertainer with a social message….war brings with it nothing but destruction....people have everything to lose and nothing to gain......
